SERIES: Halloween Speakeasy Birthday
br> r>
I'm having a belated birthday this year. Very belated. I'm also in transition on the homefront, so it might not be all that feasible for me to have my traditional, wholly enthusastic, done-to-the-gills Halloween party. Because I couldn't get my friends and family together for a birthday party around the bonifide date (despite three tries), I've decided to take my cousin up on her offer (well, the offer was +originally+ around the actual birthday date) and have the party at her house. That takes care of the locale. And the general Halloween decor? Well, she's as mad for Halloween as I am, so her house was largely decorated with jack o' lanterns, crows and brambly branches by the end of September. Some slight additions might be needed for the vintage 1920s Halloween speakeasy theme (my inspiration theme of choice), but not many. We're about a quarter of the way there already, and we haven't even begun to brainstorm. : )
My cousin's first question was "Sit down or buffet?" I said that depended on the number of guests. She then said "How many guests?" I did a mental calculation, then dialed up all the invitees, and told her about 12 all total, give or take, and then I said "buffet." The invitees asked about costumes and theme (1920s speakeasy, costumes encouraged) and time (evening, precise time determined later). I'll fill in the details when I mail out the invitations (which I will make).
So, things to still figure out:
1) invitations (what to do and how to make)
2) menu (what to serve and who's making it)
3) birthday cake (ideas and who will make)
4) any extra decorations or props needed for theme
Item 1 -- Invitations
Generally, and time permitting, I like to make invitations myself. And for a Halloween party, the fete-of-fetes? Absolutely I want to make them. Some ideas I've got rolling around in my brain include something that incorporates the "peephole" element
Item 2 -- Menu
Pretty loose here. Whatever anyone wants to make is welcome. My cousin is going to make a chicken apple curry, roasted vegetable terrine, a lump crabmeat dip and some other things. I've promised to make a sweet (the cake) and a couple of savories. Another friend is bringing an appetizer.
Item 3 -- Birthday Cake
My idea is either Edward Gorey or a miniature stage (representing our speakeasy). Made by me.
Item 4 -- Extra Props
Hmmm....my cousin was thinking of renting a bar (speakeasy theme). We'll see how it goes.
